Sabby Duthie

Innovative Housing Development

Biography

A talented entrepreneur, Sabby has extensive experience working with and empowering elders in the housing and retirement community.  She is passionate about providing them with independence and choice, and is committed to cultivating autonomy and connectedness for Canada’s ageing populations.

Sabby believes leading with excellence begins with personal mastery. She holds a law degree and successfully completed her call to the bar in 2007.   Leveraging her inner sense of values and vision along with her education was the key to begin working with elders in a real and tangible way. In 2001, Sabby was involved in the design, construction and operation of The Empress Kanata, a 90-suite multi-service retirement residence west of Ottawa. For the next five years, Sabby co-ran and operated the residence, supporting the residents and their families in independent living, assisted living and palliative care. In 2007, Sabby and her family successfully opened a second residence; The Wedgewood Brockville, a beautiful 109-suite retirement resort overlooking the St. Lawrence River.  The Wedgewood was operated and managed by Sabby until 2016.

A strong advocate for elder rights. Her legal training and experience working with seniors and their families for the past 20 years has provided her with the knowledge that the most powerful way for promoting independence and choice is by providing a voice and a stable environment to be confident leaders of their own lives, which is exhibited in her recent venture where she co-authored a book with Mr. John Johnson called Elder Abuse:  You Have a Role To Play.  Her next entrepreneurial project is to address social isolation for the older person by embarking upon a new enterprise called Bumbershoot Solutions Inc.
